Welcome to the United Professors of Marin Website!
United Professors of Marin (UPM), AFT local 1610, is the faculty union at College of Marin, which has two campuses, one in Kentfield and our Indian Valley campus in Novato, California. During our 50 year history we have represented, through collective bargaining, our librarians, counselors, and professors. Our collective bargaining agreement (CBA) is a nationally recognized model. We are leaders in the areas of equity and respect for part-time and non credit faculty. We have successfully bargained for excellent pro rata pay, health benefits and reemployment rights for them. The solidarity of our members was essential in gaining these rights. By gaining these rights, we also made the District aware of the benefits of increasing our proportion of full time faculty members. This has created a more stable faulty, greater access for students, and the ability for faculty to contribute more to the College. These gains have made us a better workplace and stronger college overall. They have made College of Marin a better place for learning and teaching to take place.
UPM is a professional faculty union that advocates for you. In order to do this for you , we need your active support. A small portion of your pay, called a representation fee, will be deducted from your paycheck to help pay the cost to represent you. This fee does not automatically make you a member of UPM, but you must pay it, just as UPM must represent you. We hope, however, that you will want to become an active member. The only other thing that you need to do to become a member is to fill out a membership form, which can be found in the UPM newsletter and on this website. Please turn it in at our UPM office, which is located in Village Square (VS) 11. Union membership provides you with a wide variety of services available to AFT members, including insurance, credit union membership and discounts on travel and recreation. Most importantly, membership enables you to vote in UPM/AFT election of officers and for contract ratification.
A list of the UPM committees and officers can be found on this website and in our monthly UPM Newsletter. You can also find copies of our Collective Bargaining Agreement, our Salary Schedule, our Constitution and our Bylaws on this site.
We hope that you will all support your union by becoming and remaining members during your tenure at College of Marin. We invite your active participation in the union’s democratic process by attending union meetings and Executive Council meetings. We urge you to vote in our elections and serve on our committees. Together, in solidarity, we can make College of Marin a better place for our members and our students.
