    REBUILDING OUR UNION VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
TO SERVE ON THE UNION ELECTIONS COMMITTEE

From Gerard Friesz, Western Regional Director for AFT

    (Downloadable PDF of the announcement)

Submission Deadline: written or email response received in the UPM office by 3:00 p.m. Thursday March 7, 2019

On February 20, 2019, UPM members attending a General Membership Meeting voted to recall all nine (9) members of the Executive Council. The California Federation of Teachers (CFT) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) are providing important and necessary guidance and support to the local during this interim period and the priority is to conduct an election to fill all nine officer vacancies on the Executive Council this spring.

Those members elected to office will help shape the future of United Professors of Marin, Local 1610. They will oversee the union’s finances, contract negotiations and grievances, and conduct other business affecting the professional lives of the union membership.

To start the process of electing new officers, the AFT and CFT are soliciting three (3) volunteers to serve on an Elections Committee. The Election Committee and the election will be guided by support from AFT and CFT, so previous union election experience is not necessary.

As a member of the Elections Committee you will be responsible for conducting a fair and honest election of union officers in accordance with the law and the local constitution and bylaws. Elections Committee members will have important oversight responsibilities throughout the nomination and election process. The committee will likely meet weekly either in person or telephonically throughout the nomination and election process and more often if necessary. This is a volunteer opportunity and Committee members must be willing to attend meetings and manage, tally and report election results on Election Day.

Election Committee members must be members in good standing with UPM Local 1610 and must agree that they will not seek or accept a nomination for any of the offices being filled.
